Meet Our Mascot

Holland Legal’s mascot is the cunning, intelligent, and adaptable fox. The fox not only represents the same qualities clients seek in a lawyer, but has a very important symbolism in American legal history.

Pierson v. Post (1805) is a landmark New York case that helped define the concept of “first possession” in American property law by determining who rightfully owned a fox—one hunter who pursued it or another who actually captured it. The court’s decision established important principles for when and how property rights arise in previously unowned resources, and its influence continues to shape legal interpretations of possession and ownership across the United States.
